Shark Diving in Roatan, Honduras

While diving in Roatan, Honduras, we had the incredible opportunity to go on two shark dives. The shark diving excursions were some of the best diving we did in Roatan, and our experience has stuck with us throughout the years.

All of the shark dives were set up through the resort we stayed at, and we paid an extra fee for them. It was totally worth it though, and the cost of shark diving in Roatan didn’t deter us from going.

We were picked up at our resort, and then headed out for the day! The captain was also the dive master and shark expert and as we headed toward the site, he briefed us on how the dives would work.

As we descended the line to the dive site, we could already see sharks in the area. The sharks are very used to people diving there, and knew exactly what was going to happen. We swam with the sharks for a bit before they were fed and they were extremely curious, but not aggressive in the least. It was actually amazing how they would swim right up to a diver and then turn away at the last possible second. Once we swam with the sharks, the dive master instructed us to all line up against a large coral head. As soon as everyone was lined up and kneeling in the sand, he opened a large bucket of fish parts and the sharks went crazy! One even flipped the bucket in an attempt to get at everything inside. It was honestly a little nerve wracking watching the sharks go into a small feeding frenzy. It was over within seconds however, and the sharks went on their way.

Tips for diving with sharks:

  1. Find a reputable dive operation

  2. Keep your cool - sharks are very intuitive

  3. Don’t touch any sharks

  4. Take pictures and videos!

  5. Follow all the dive masters’ instructions

  6. Learn everything you can about sharks from the people who dive with them regularly - ask question on the boat before and after the dive
